02

This page is being written several months after the other one. Having now seen the whole 02 series I'll sum up Joe's role in it and stuff. This site is still predominantly for him in 01 (he's a lot cooler in 01, in my opinion) but it doesn't hurt to talk about his future. ^_^.

Joe, being in a higher grade at school than the others, and working to get into medicine, spends a lot of his time studying. Because he is so busy, we don't see him as often as the other original digidestined. When we do see him in the real world, some of the things we see him doing include a) discussing a test with some friends, b) taking a test (at cram school, I assume, but this wasn't said in the dub), c) sitting in class... exciting life. ^_^.

Apparently, after all that soul-searching in 01, he has decided to become a doctor anyway. But we can see definite changes in him from 01 - it seems he kept that promise he made to himself in "Joe's Battle" (it's time for a brand new Joe, etc etc).

His whole attitude is fairly different; he's more serious and adult. He's kind of quiet and calm and reliable, like the daggy/nervy/pessimistic qualities have been lost in the process of growing up. This is the case for most 01 digidestined, actually; they've lost most of their faults in the span between seasons, because of what they learned in digiworld.

As the series continues a little more, I think the writers decided they'd better have Joe bear a little more resemblance to his 01 self because he made occasional comments like his 01 ones; mentioning seasickness and doubting whether they could make it at the end of the season.

Here are some of Joe's appearances. Not all of them because my memory isn't great, and he also makes some appearances where he does almost nothing.

  • At the start of the series, he meets the other original digidestined to discuss how Davis, Yolei and Cody have digivices.

  • A couple of episodes later, he goes into the digital world for the first time in ages after sensing that Gomamon was in trouble. I summarised this more on the other 02 page.

  • Halfway through the Digimon Emporer saga, during the 01 memorial, all the digidestined feature. Joe is shown in class (wishing the bell would ring so he could leave ^_^.) and also hanging out with the others. His role is minimal. ^_^;

  • Still later in the Digimon Emporer saga, Cody receives the digiegg of Reliability and there is a law that says the crest holder has to be present when a newbie receives that digiegg. ^_^. The other digidestined are trapped in an off-shore oil platform and Joe with his water Digimon are the only ones who can save the day. Cody escapes and finds Joe, but he has to lie to get Joe out of a test he was taking.

Joe rushes out of cram school, calls Izzy to ask him to contact Whamon, and goes with Cody to the digital world. They soon rescue the others in Whamon. Cody does not want to take his digiegg because he feels guilty but Joe talks kindly to him and persuades him. Cody uses the digiegg of Reliability to produce Submarimon, who fights alongside Ikkakumon to beat an enemy.

Interesting note: Cody lies and says that Joe's father was in an emergency and taken to hospital. Joe rushes out of the classroom in a panic at the thought of his father being in trouble, before Cody explains. So relations between Joe and his father can't be as dire as we might have believed in 01. ^_^.

  • When Izzy is firing off commands to the other digidestined, to send emails to people around the world, his order to Joe is - make us some coffee. ^_^.

  • When Digimon break through into various points around the real world, old and new digidestined pair off to round them up and pull them back. Somehow, Joe and Cody get the task of going to Australia. I thought this was very cool because I live in Australia and Joe was my favourite. (He was when I made most of this page, but now I think I like Sora a leetle better. ^_^.)

Anyway, Joe and Cody head Down Under (Joe wonders what 'Down Under' is supposed to mean, anyway ^_^.) and meet a boy digidestined called Derrick. The three start rounding up Digimon to take them to the Great Barrier Reef. It must have taken quite a few hours to get to the Great Barrier Reef from Sydney in a small boat (and Joe gets seasick - but fortunately, it only happens when he's around water ^_^.), but oh well. ^_^.

At one point (memory is fuzzy), the boys have to fight a water enemy. Submarimon and Coelamon (Derrick's Digimon) team up with Zudomon, who managed to reach Ultimate with the help of Azulongmon's power. There are other water Digimon enemies but they chicken out from fighting. This is because Joe and company, getting hungry, fantasise about how good these Digimon would taste. ^_^.

  • Joe makes several appearances in the last few episodes, as do all the digidestined, because they are all working together to beat Digimon in the real world. None of these appearances are particularly memorable. He receives Gomamon as a 'Christmas present' and keeps him with him in the real world for some time. He attends Matt's rock concert with the others. He and Zudomon help fight MarineDevimon. He goes with the other five originals to face MaloMyotismon. Et cetera.

Late in the 02 series, we get to meet Joe's other older brother. Joe has two older brothers; in the Japanese version, Shin (the oldest, who we met in 01) and Shuu (the middle brother, who we meet here). Joe is the youngest. However, the dub really messed this up and called Shuu Jim. Presumably they were trying to pass off this guy as Joe's brother whom we met in 01. Instead it just makes it confusing to talk about Joe's brothers, who are now both called Jim in the dub. (Later in the series, we see Jim1 - Shin, and Jim2 - Shuu, standing together, but no comment is made on that. ^_^.)

Anyway, Jim2 claims that he gave up medicine to study folklore or some such nonsense. He travels around with Sora's father, and the two have been studying a number of mythologies including Digimon. The two meet Yolei in Kyoto and discover the reality of Digimon.

Jim2 appears later in Tokyo to help the digidestined again. He drives Davis, Cody and TK to look for Ken, who has been kidnapped. He is driving his father's car, and quite recklessly, but he seems to be a pretty good driver because he avoids major accidents.

In the future, Joe becomes a doctor and treats sick Digimon with the help of Gomamon. The identity of his wife isn't known (assuming he has one), but he obviously did not get together with any of the digidestined females. Joe has one son, a boy who looks rather like him. This is not surprising; it seems like Kido genetics only allow for males with blue hair and glasses. We see this 25 years in the future, and his son is probably about 9 years old.

Jim1 probably continued to be a doctor; we do not see his future. Jim2 continues his work in digital world studies and in the future he is still working with Sora's father, as well as Izzy.
