![]() Heheh! I finally got to see some of 02! See, my pal Rb who is GREAT and SO nice, sent me four episodes of 02 and one of those was "Old Reliable" which featured Joe fairly prominently. ^_^. ^_^. ^_^. Anyway, as this is all I've seen I can't give you a full view of what Joe is like and what his role is in the second series of Digimon but here's what I do know from watching that episode. Joe is either in high school or in med school. He was shown talking to a couple of friends discussing an anatomy test, which insinuates he may be in medical school, and the new digidestined did call him "the doctor" (to which he replied he wasn't a doctor quite yet). I think he makes the perfect doctor. He is still very practical and organised. Now that he is older, he has lost most of that bumbling clumsiness. He's not a dork any more, he's one of those mature sorts of men, the dignified type of person you can imagine studying law or something. ^_^. He still says a couple of weird things but mostly he has lost his childhood awkwardness. He doesn't complain any more, and generally, he's turned out pretty well. Here's what happened in the episode, the Joe-centric elements of it anyway. (BTW, sorry the video captures aren't very good quality but I don't think the video adapter thing liked NTSC, American-format videos. ^^;;) Old Reliable The setting is a frozen wasteland. Digimon Emporer is attacking some poor Gizamon who are stumbling along trying to carry things for him. Basically they're working as slaves. He whips one of them for falling, and suddenly the whip is caught by Gomamon, who snaps that the Emporer is being mean and so on. The Emporer has all the Gizamon attack Gomamon, and then leaves him in the snow to die. Gomamon stumbles along, badly battered, forcing himself up to the TV set that serves as a link to the real world. He groans "Joe" and collapses in the snow. In the real world, Joe is standing with a couple of friends, talking about an anatomy test they are about to have. His digivice reacts - for some reason, he still wears it - and he runs off saying that "I just remembered I forgot to remember something!".
![]() Gomamon!! Joe goes to the elementary school's computer room, where the kids freak out (trying to hide their Digimon) until TK and Kari recognise him and introduce him to Yolei and Davis. Davis thinks Joe is cool, and Yolei asks him to check her tonsils (I don't wanna know... ^^;;). Joe says the distress call came from Gomamon, and he will come to the digital world with them. Cody comes, late, from a kendo practise and so he is not properly introduced to Joe. Joe has a big bag with him that has food in it (Demiveemon wants to get into it ^_^.); he has come prepared to go with them into the digital world because he's worried about Gomamon.
![]() It's weird seeing the Digimon here in the real world! All the digidestined go to the digital world and find themselves in a cold, snowing place. Cody starts to introduce himself to Joe but Davis interrupts with his complaints about the cold (says he who is wearing the warmest clothes of any of them...). Joe hands out little packages designed to warm everyone's hands. Yolei drops hers, and the heat evaporates some of the snow, revealing Gomamon's face. He is buried in the snow. Joe yelps "Gomamon!" and starts digging in the snow with his bare hands. Gomamon is finally extracted and sits dazedly, looking quite bruised and sore, while Joe strokes his face in the way a doctor might.
Joe: Gomamon, speak to me! What day of the week is it?
![]() You look awful! They decide to destroy a control spire but there is a long expanse of ice and snow to cross. Joe jokingly apologises for not having brought skates, but he has brought rope, so the kids and their Digimon all work together to make a sled. Don't ask me how they manage this impressive feat, especially in such a short time. But they do, and tether their Digimon up to it, except for Gomamon who is being carried everywhere by Joe, still weak.
![]() Sorry, all out of skates... They are attacked by Frigimon with dark gears, but Joe shouts to ignore them, they should just complete their mission which is to destroy the spire. So they swerve and after a few near misses, everyone escapes except for Cody who falls into some icy water. Gomamon dives to rescue him.
![]() Just keep going... The kids find a cave and Cody huddles next to the fire, shivering. Joe makes him some herbal tea ("it's 90% tea, 10% herbal!") and says he will look after Cody while the other kids destroy the spire. Cody wants to go with them but he needs to conserve his strength. Joe says he knows how he feels - he used to feel the same way (anxious to do more to help) but has learned that everything happens for a reason.
![]() Our being here is for a reason... His words are soon proven right - they are there for a reason. The Digimon Emporer attacks with a controlled Shellmon, and Joe realises they have to keep them busy so that the other kids have a safe run to destroy the spire. Joe tells Gomamon to keep Shellmon busy with the "ol' Gomamon charm", to which Gomamon responds by leaping out of his arms, skittering up to Shellmon and telling bad jokes which almost result in him being killed. Armadillomon armour digivolves and saves Gomamon. He uses Gold Rush to destroy the black ring but Ebidramon appears out of the water. The Digimon Emporer never has a shortage of slaves.
![]() When are they going to destroy the spire?! Ebidramon is stronger than Shellmon and Digmon is having difficulty fighting him, but the control spire is finally destroyed. Gomamon digivolves into Ikkakumon, jumps into the water and frees Digmon (who was being held in wrestling underwater). The two fight together to finish off Ebidramon. All is well now. Joe tells Gomamon that he's in charge of the area now. "Great, a frozen wasteland, just what I always wanted." Joe says it will give Gomamon the chance to practise his jokes. Then Cody says they still have one piece of unfinished business - their introduction. He introduces himself formally and bows.
![]() Manners are the most important thing a man can have. Davis doesn't get what the big deal about introducing yourself is, and Cody says his grandfather told him that aside from prune juice, manners are the most important thing a man can have. Kari says that Cody reminds her a lot of Joe - "always honest, and sticks to the rules". TK says that Cody's more like Izzy. Joe says that a combination of him and Izzy is scary. ^_^. Back in the real world, Cody asks Joe to come and fight with them again, and to meet his grandfather, who he is sure will like Joe. Joe agrees to both of these. |
