Why I like anime

When I get interested in something, I throw myself full-force into it. How? I dunno... if it's a series I'm following, I'll wonder what's gonna happen next and think of what's been past.

I'll surf webpages and eagerly catch up with other people's opinions about it. I might stick pictures of it on my books or in my locker. I'll download mp3s and read fanfics and - yeah - make webpages.

My current main interest is probably Digimon. I'm listening to Shinka de guts or whatever it's called right now. ^_^. Song = cuteness.

Seems I always seem to get into things that are aimed at a younger age group. I do like mainstream, dubbed anime - like, the stuff that's on TV. And that often is aimed at younger people. But the plots and characters and style of drawing appeal to me much more than any American programs ('cept Tailspin, one of my old favourites)...

Anyway, why DO I like anime? I can't explain why or how I get interested in things. It just strikes a chord somewhere and then suddenly I'm totally hooked and lovin' it.

How I got INTO anime ties in with this story and is on the experience page, but what it is that I like about anime is here. There are many factors that help, but what it all boils down to is that it DOES strike a chord and I just like it.

Music. I love (much) anime music. I listen to it more than the radio or anything. I like the lyrics, they have meaning. I like the sound of the words, and the tunes.

Style. The things I associate with anime. Sweatdrops and bulging veins. The way when something dramatic happens, like a character taking a fatal blow, the music sometimes stops and it is silent as they fall in slow motion, until they hit the ground. The way action scenes are sometimes demonstrated with still shots.

Drawing. I love the animation style, the way things are drawn. I like the way characters are drawn. I like drawing that way myself. ^_^. Some of these styles I like better than others, but overall I do like it better than most American cartoons. The style Sailor Moon was drawn in was a huge factor in attracting me to the series, and thus to anime.

Plotlines. They can be mature or they can be simple. I like a mixture; something where things happen, and there are twists in the plot, but not something so utterly convoluted that I lose track of what's happening if I blink. It's easy to find such mixtures.

Characters. The characters seem real. They have personality. They change and grow and develop. They suffer things, make jokes, have character quirks. They're LIKEABLE. I need characters I can like.

Voice acting. Another important factor, it goes hand-in-hand with characters, because the voices give them life and personality.

Ease of access. Anime is a good hobby to have because it is easy to access; some is on TV, some in a video store, some downloadable on the 'net... there's such a variety to it, so many titles to explore and discover, that it's hard to get bored with it early.

Some of the above was generalisations; not all anime have, say, good character development (*cough*Pokemon*cough) and not all have an art style I like, and some have music that quite annoys me, but in general I have to say that lots of anime are great. ^_^.
